Street art has to stand out from the static, and contend with the metabolism of the city. To some people it's considered vandalism, to others it’s gentrification, and either of those could be considered more legit than the other depending on your perspective. - Shepard
Thanks for the great shot of my "Fire Sale" mural @theirishtaoist! I'm grateful to have this mural across from the historic Pike Place Market, its one of the first places I did street art in Seattle about 20 years ago. - Shepard

Rowdy Roddy Piper was a pro wrestler and also the protagonist of John Carpenter’s film, “They Live." This film, along with my love of Orwell, inspired the use of the word OBEY in my art. Roddy knew about the OBEY connection, and we met up a couple of times. He told me some amazing stories about his early days struggling to establish himself as a wrestler and his times with Andre the Giant. We had a great time talking about rebellion and what it takes to make it on your own terms. Rowdy Roddy Piper was an original and he is missed. Today would have been his 65th birthday so watch “They Live” if you haven’t. Roddy has some great lines like “I came here to chew bubblegum and kick-ass and I’m all out of bubblegum.” That one was appropriated and reworked by Linklater in “Dazed and Confused.” Thanks for the inspiration, Roddy. - Shepard
Fan the Flames is about the unfortunate truth that unchecked capitalism and a livable planet will soon be incompatible. Capitalism is predicated on expanding consumption and profits without regard to environmental consequences (with the exception of a few conscientious companies). I’m not making an indictment of capitalism in its entirety, only making the point that safety checks need to exist to put the health of the many before the profits of a few. The function of government is to serve the needs of the people who elected it before the needs of corporations, however corporate donations and lobbyists corrupt democracy in the way that they shift government's priorities from the needs of the many to the desires of big corporations. Campaign finance reform would help to keep polluters and fossil fuel corporations from going unchecked. We all need to think about how we vote and how we consume with an eye on a very delicate future ecologically. If you have not read it, I’d strongly recommend Naomi Klein’s book “This Changes Everything”… the market does not solve all problems; most need to be solved by humans who understand ethical responsibility. Proceeds from this print will benefit @350org, but I’d also suggest checking out @representus. Thanks for caring! - Shepard

My wife and I love Paris and all its beauty and we just visited the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris last year. It's beautiful in photographs but absolutely stunning in real life. I'm hopeful that it can be repaired and my thoughts are with the people of Paris and everyone who this effects. - Shepard
My wife Amanda and I are proud to support the Library Foundation of Los Angeles and attended this year's Young Literati 2019 Annual Toast to benefit public libraries, democratize information, provide valuable programs, and promote the literacy of our city! The artwork that @cleonpeterson and I created decorated the stage, and the invites and programs were designed by my creative agency @studionumberone! Thank you @youngliteratila and thank you @amandafairey for your leadership with the Library Foundation. Don't forget to support your local libraries! - Shepard

Music is something that I’ve been passionate about since I was a kid. I love the accessibility of music; it is democratic in a way that most visual art is not. In fact, I emulate the music model in the ways that I disseminate my visual art. Happy #RecordStoreDay, go visit your local record store and have fun digging! - Shepard

Punk rock band OFF! @offofficial is making a movie called "Watermelon” and according to their lead singer Keith Morris (original singer for Black Flag and the Circle Jerks), it deals with the band breaking up and then getting back together to combat evil forces in the world! I’ll be doing a piece of art for their Kickstarter soon in the same spirit of this collab I did with them in 2014. Support them at their campaign page (link in bio). -Shepard
I created this ‘Lead by Example’ ADOPT print back in 2009. The project started as a commemoration of the historic day that a dog adopted from a shelter or rescue group took up residence in the White House, but it then became a plea for everyone to ‘Lead by Example!' The directive was a ‘call to action’ to raise awareness for the plight of shelter animals nationwide. I partnered with Adopt-a-Pet.com to get the millions of great shelter animals to be seen, saved and into loving homes. Proceeds from the print purchases went entirely towards these efforts. It was and still is my hope today that this piece inspires people to become advocates for these animals. These animals urgently need us! - Shepard

I attended the Cesar Chavez Legacy Awards last Thursday in Los Angeles. Thank you @chavezfoundation for making me one of the Honorees, alongside California Secretary of State Alex Padilla @alexpadilla4ca, NPR’S Lulu Garcia-Navarro, cartoonist and activist Lalo Alcaraz @laloalcaraz1, and civil rights activist Sylvia Mendez @sylviamendez82. I was honored to stand next to those who have inspired and transformed our communities. Viva la causa! - Shepard
