I just completed my "Rose Girl" mural in Grenoble, France as part of the @grenoblestreetartfest. The mural is in a very busy part of town with student housing and the Alps as the backdrop. I could not ask for a better location! The "Rose Girl" is a symbol of peace and harmony with fellow humans and the earth. Grenoble has been making strides toward ecological responsibility, and I hope my mural can be a visual companion to the efforts toward sustainability. Thank you to my crew of Dan Flores, Nicholas Bowers, and Rob Zagula for helping me complete the mural even working through the rain the first day! Thank you also to Jerome Catz and Michael Foley and the Grenoble Street Art Fest Team for their efforts to promote my art and ideas in Grenoble. And of course, thank you to Jon Furlong for the photos!⠀
As part of the 30-year anniversary project, the "Facing the Giant: 3 Decades of Dissent" series will be on view with a larger print survey titled "Obey: 30 Years of Resistance" at @grenoblestreetartfest, featuring more than 600 prints from Shepard's career. On view from June 6th to October 27th, 2019 in Grenoble, France. Visit the link in bio for more details.
EARTH CRISIS AVAILABLE TUESDAY, JUNE 18TH!
According to co-curator of "Facing the Giant: Three Decades of Dissent," Pedro Alonzo: In November 2015, Shepard unveiled his latest public art installation "Earth Crisis," a giant sphere suspended between the first and second floor of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Designed in honor of COP21 - the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, the massive sphere was inscribed with a mandala-inspired design decorated with floral motifs and a silhouette of the iconic Parisian landmark.
The original design that inspired the Parisian installation can be seen in the print here, which was created in 2014 to benefit the Natural Resources Defense Council to aid in their efforts to influence legislation to protect the environment. Shepard re-designed the original black and white design, adopting a blue motif to heighten the teardrop element and alluding to the importance of sustainability in clean air and water. This emblem serves as the central shield depicted within the larger Paris installation.
Earth Crisis. Serigraph on 100% Cotton Custom Archival Paper with hand-deckled edges. 30 x 41 inches. Signed by Shepard Fairey. Numbered edition of 89. Comes with a certificate of authenticity. $900. A portion of proceeds will go to @350org. Available Tuesday, June 18th @ 10 AM PDT at store.obeygiant.com/collections/prints. Max order: 1 per customer/household. *Orders are not guaranteed as demand is high and inventory is limited.* Multiple orders will be refunded. International customers are responsible for import fees due upon delivery. ALL SALES FINAL.
I'm currently in France kicking things off for my 30th anniversary project, "Facing The Giant: Three Decades of Dissent" at @grenoblestreetartfest and working on a new mural with my team. Here's a progress shot, hope to share the final soon. Special thanks to the Mayor of Grenoble, Éric Poille for stopping by! - Shepard
"Facing the Giant: Three Decades of Dissent" is a reflection on the last 30 years of my career, highlighting both the continuity and the evolution of my art and concepts. It began with an absurd sticker of Andre The Giant, which then evolved into an exploration of control, questioning control, and questioning the giant monolithic forces that we are all subjected to. I'm confronting these giant issues with my work, so it's got a duality to the name. I come from punk rock, skateboarding, and rebellious cultures, and I started off doing work in the street without permission. Dissent is at the root of what I do, and it continues to be an important part of my work because pushing back against dominant systems that allow and perpetuate injustice requires dissent.
#FACINGTHEGIANT is a curated selection from the last 30 years featuring key works that highlight clear messages of empowerment. The series will go on tour with me as I travel to several cities for exhibitions and painted murals along the way. We officially kicked off this week in France @grenoblestreetartfest but also debuting the exhibition in the U.S. at @beyondthestreetsart in Brooklyn and then in Paris @galerieitinerrance. Here's a look at the rest of the cities I'll be hitting this year, stay tuned for more info!

Thanks, @chopemdownfilms, for capturing this clip of my mural in Seattle! I completed this “Fire Sale” mural with my team last October at @thestatehotel. The term “fire sale” means the liquidation of goods damaged in a fire, or it can mean a rush to sell off inventory before a bankruptcy. This piece is a comment on the challenges any individual faces when pushing for environmental and climate responsibility.
I’ll be working on a new mural while I’m in France this week for @grenoblestreetartfest. Stay tuned for more updates coming soon!

In November 2015, Shepard Fairey unveiled a public art installation, a giant sphere suspended between the first and second tier of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, entitled “Earth Crisis.” Designed in honor of the World Conference on Climate Change, the massive sphere was inscribed with a mandala-inspired design adorned with floral motifs. Embedded within the image are multiple shields, each representing threats to nature and reasons to respect it. Composed of environmentally themed graphics, the sphere was designed to raise awareness about issues like global warming and oil spills.⠀⠀
This print, entitled “A Delicate Balance,” reproduces a modified version of the spherical design used in the original Paris installation on view only one week after the terrorist attacks in Paris and coinciding with the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference known as COP21.⠀⠀
Proceeds from A Delicate Balance will benefit @350org to support their efforts to combat climate change. ⠀⠀

I created this "Fossil Factory" art in 2017, which is based on a former factory in the 13th district of Paris which is now used for classrooms at a university. Fossil fuel powered industries still have tremendous power economically, but we now know that not only are those fuel sources finite, but that using them is terrible for climate change and the eco-systems that sustain life on our planet. I’d like to see more fossil factories turned into schools while we subsidize research into renewable energy solutions rather than the current practice of subsidizing the fossil fuel industries for billions as they damage the environment. Please read Naomi Klein’s "THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING" to better understand the conflict between economic interests and climate change. You can also visit @350org to support their efforts to fight climate change. Thanks for caring. – Shepard

ENDLESS POWER PETROL PALACE AVAILABLE THIS THURSDAY, JUNE 6TH!⠀⠀
This poster is both a celebration and critique of the seductive graphic propaganda used for the petroleum industry. I designed this to feel like a vintage ad celebrating the abundance of America and the bright future of the American Dream. Though oil is finite, reliance on it is so extreme that the power wielded by those who control oil is virtually unlimited. Oil may have seemed initially to be endless, but we know now the world’s oil reserves will run out eventually but more importantly, we know from thorough scientific research that the planet does not have the endless power to maintain a stable climate if oil and gas Carbon emissions (as well as from other sources) do not decrease dramatically.⠀⠀
Here is the challenge: our lifestyle cannot survive without oil and gas, but our planet cannot survive with their use remaining anywhere close to current levels. Unless we cultivate renewables, we are heading for a tipping point that will be potentially irreversible and unquestionably devastating.
A portion of proceeds from “Endless Power Petrol Palace” will be donated to @350org to support the work they do fighting climate change. Please visit the link in bio to read my full statement about this piece and the oil and gas industry.⠀⠀
Endless Power Petrol Palace on cream Speckletone paper. Available on Thursday, June 6th at store.obeygiant.com/collection/prints. Two colorways: Blue - available at 10 AM PDT and Red - available at 11 AM PDT. 18 x 24 inches. Signed by Shepard Fairey. Numbered edition of 350. $50. Portion of proceeds will go to @350org. Max order: 1 per customer/household. *Orders are not guaranteed as demand is high and inventory is limited.* Multiple orders will be refunded.
